30. September 1998:

Western American Literature Conference

ON 25-28 October 2000, the University of Oklahoma is scheduled to host the Western American Literature conference. In addition to papers and plenary speakers, some of them well-known writers, there will be receptions and tours at the Western History Collection (which features a large collection of historic photographs) and the Museum of Fine Art, which has a large collection of paintings dealing with the American West.

The Cowboy Hall of Fame is about 30 minutes away by car. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, there is the Gilcrease Museum of Western Art. In Lawton, Oklahoma, there is Fort Sill, which has a military museum, the guardhouse in which Geronimo is imprisoned, and the Apache graveyard. Nearby is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Museum, where bison range free. South is Gene Autry, Oklahoma, home of the Gene Autry Museum, devoted to the singing cowboys of Hollywood westerns. Still farther south are Fort Worth and Dallas--about 300 kilometers--with many attractions which have Western themes.

Should you know of anyone interested, I will be happy to send them information. Thank you.
