When I was a child I read many Karl May stories in Roumanian, and they left a strong impression on me. 20 years later, I find myself wanting to read the same stories again. Unfortunately, I no longer read Roumanian, having moved to Canada and lost my skills in that language. I have tried very hard to find books by him in English, and have had dismal success. In particular, I want to find the "Old Surehand", "Old Shatterhand", and Winnetou stories.
Do you have any suggestions, or places that I might be directed to for further help?
Many thanks,
For the last 20 years the only person I spoke to who heard of Karl May was my father - who had introduced me to the writings. Being from Europe, you probably couldn't imagine how many book sellers in how many cities in the USA and Canada I have dropped in on, only to find that not only did they not have any books by Karl May, they hadn't even heard of him.
It seems I might find some of what I want through some German booksellers.
Walther Ilmer informed that the Karl-May-Verlag in Germany is concerned only with the printing and marketing of Karl May's books. This company apparently made an arrangement with Seabury Press in NY to have several of his books translated into english and distributed in the US. These are now all out of print but may be obtained by calling the following locations;
Karl-May-Verlag Schutzenstrasse 30 D-996047 Bamberg, Germany

Herr Ekkehard Bartsch Karl-May-Gessellschaft Riihimakistrasse 22 D-23975 Bad Segeberg, Germany
Hello,
I have almost the identical story to tell as the Rumanian, Mr. Gyl Midroni. I read the Winnetou books as a child (40 years ago), in Norwegian translation. I now seek the books in English for I have two sons who would enjoy them.
I will contact the German publisher.
Sincerely,
